Aonang is a beachside resort town in the province of Krabi, famous for its sunsets, snorkelling, and lively nightlife. It is close to many islands and is an excellent location for touring the local islands. You will not be stuck with things to do in Aonang.
I spent a total of one month in Aonang, which was full of action-packed, once-in-a-lifetime adventures that I will never forget. I have compiled a list of 14 incredible things to do in Aonang; these were my absolute favourite activities.
I also put all these epic things to do in Aonang on a shared Google map, including places to eat, drink, sleep, and practical information such as pharmacies and nice co-working cafes.
To help you plan your trip to this incredible part of the world, I am sharing the most memorable things to do in Aonang. Let’s dive in!
Things To Do In Aonang
1. Monkey Trail
The monkey trail is one of the unforgettable things to do in Ao Nang. Trek through the edge of the jungle via a series of wooden steps and boards, and at the end, be rewarded with the secluded Pai Plong Beach.
The real highlight of this short trek is the troop of macaques that loiter around the start of the trail, feasting off fresh crab and coconuts. They are a calm troop, mostly preferring to keep to themselves, unless you have food, of course! I have to say, they are the cutest macaques I have seen in Southeast Asia.
The trail starts here, taking approximately 20 minutes to reach Pai Plong Beach. It is steep in some parts, and the wooden stairs have seen better days, so make sure to wear trainers rather than flip-flops or sandals. The way back to Ao Nang is the same path.
2. Watch A Muay Thai Match
Muay Thai is a big sport in Thailand, and watching a live fight should definitely be on your Thailand bucket list. For us, it was one of the best things to do at night in Aonang. I highly recommend Krabi International Boxing Stadium. The atmosphere is electric, with pro-fighters from all around the world fighting here. A ticket gives you access to six fights in one night.
It is worth noting that there are many Muay Thai stadiums across Thailand. However, some of them use children to fight, but not Krabi International Boxing Stadium. Always do your due diligence before purchasing a ticket so you don’t end up giving your money to an unethical company.
3. Mañana Mexican Restaurant
I too can’t believe I am recommending a Mexican restaurant on my list of fun things to do in Ao Nang blog post! Trust me, this will be the best Mexican food outside of Mexico that you will have. I don’t say that lightly; I am a Mexican food connoisseur! Seriously, it is usually all I want to eat!
Located on a quiet side street in Ao Nang is Mañana Mexican. You will know it before you see it because the friendly and warm owner (affectionately called Big Mama) will call you over with a “hey baby” and an infectious smile!
Inside, the space is colourful, fitted with lots of fans, and adorned with some really cool Mexican murals and decorations. Highlights of the menu include mole enchiladas (very spicy), birria tacos, chimichangas, spiced margaritas, and toreadors.
4. Learn To Cook Like A Local
Okay, so you’ve had a Mexican meal in Thailand, feeling a bit guilty, and now you want to atone for your sins? Fret not, I know just the place for you!
This half-day Thai Cooking class will teach you how to cook like a local. Cook five authentic Thai meals; choices include Pad Thai, Chicken Cashew, Massaman, Panang, and Tom Ka Kai, among many more options on the menu!
This is a souvenir like no other; impress your friends and family with a lifetime of knowledge of a few Thai dishes! Your belly and your friends at home will be glad you did one of the top things to do in Ao Nang.
5. Emerald Pool
Located 70km outside of Aonang is Sa Morakot. Here you can relax and swim in the crystal clear, mineral-rich natural Emerald Pool, named for the beautiful colours achieved by its high limestone and mineral content.
To reach the Emerald Pool, you will need to hike a short 1 km through the jungle. The scenic jungle path is clearly marked, so there is no risk of getting lost. Swimming in the Emerald Pool is allowed; it is not very deep, only about 1-2 meters.
600 meters from the Emerald Pool is the Blue Pool. Although swimming here is prohibited, it is worth walking that little bit extra to see the striking colour.
It takes a little over 1 hour to reach the emerald pool. You can visit on your own by hiring a local driver, or booking a tour. If you book a tour, I recommend find one that incorporates the Tiger Cave Temple, such as this one.
6. Tiger Cave Temple
Sitting at 278 metres is Tiger Cave Temple, also known as Wat Tham Suea, located 20km from Aonang and 55 km from Emerald Pool. This is a fun and rewarding thing to do in Aonang.
Climb up 1,200 steep steps to the top to find a large Buddha statue, with spectacular views across the Krabi province.
Despite the name, there are no tigers here, at least not anymore. During meditation, a monk witnessed tigers here, today you can see the tiger paw prints.
It is a gruelling climb to the top, especially in the hot and humid Thai temperatures, so take lots of water and go at a slow pace.
7. Watch The Sun Set On Aonang Beach
My favourite part of the day was strolling down to Ao Nang Beach to watch the sky light up in various hues of red, orange, and purple.
Grab a beer from 7/11, sit back, and watch one of the best sunsets you will ever see. This is the most relaxing thing to do in Ao Nang.
8. Fire Show
While you are on Ao Nang Beach, stay around for the incredible fire show. The performers skillfully dance and perform acrobatics with fire. The playlist is great, and people sit on the stairs with Singha. You might even be called to participate in the show.
The show lasts about 20-30 minutes, so come early to get a good spot as it does get busy.
9. Aonang Night Market
Who doesn’t love a night market? Food, souvenirs, and some great designer dupes!
The Aonang Landmark Night Market may not be the biggest market in Thailand, but it is still lots of fun. It is open every Monday to Sunday from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm. They offer a variety of different foods, including Korean and Japanese cuisine.
Aside from the Landmark night market, there are smaller night markets in Aonang town. This night market is small, yet there is a great variety of goods.
10. Railay Beach
If you want a fun day trip, I highly recommend heading to Railay Beach. It is one of the best things to do in Aonang.
Railay Beach can only be reached by boat, and although it is physically connected to the mainland, it feels like a secluded island paradise.
The boat goes from Aonang beach. You will be sharing it with about six others, and it takes only 20 minutes. We used Aonang Longtail Boat Service located across the road from Aonang Beach.
Things to do in Railay Beach include:
- Join a rock climbing course, whether you’re a beginner or an expert climber, this course caters to every level.
- Railay beach viewpoint – this is a short but intense climb with ropes on the edge of a muddy cliff. The views are incredible, and it is so much fun! Make sure to pack shoes with a good grip.
- Phranang beach with its white sand and turquoise water is a must-see!
- Princess Cave is located on Phranang Beach, it features a fertility shrine. You will see many wooden and colourful penises inside the cave
Railay Beach is small and is the perfect day trip from Aonang. However, if one day is not enough consider spending a night here! Bhu Nga Thani Resort & Villas is located close to East Railay pier, rooms are clean and spacious!
11. Phi Phi Islands
Take a trip to the famous Phi Phi island, located a 2-hour boat ride from Aonang.
Although you can take a day trip to Phi Phi from Aonang, I advise spending the night here. This will allow you to visit Maya Bay, and experience Phi Phi’s nightlife. It is known as a party island after all!
It is a very lively island, with lots of bars and restaurants.
12. Four Islands Tour
Hop aboard a speedboat, and explore the beauty of Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Tup Island, and Phranang Cave Beach. You will have the opportunity to swim and snorkel on each island.
The highlight of this tour is Tup Island, here you can walk on the sandbar that connects Chicken and Mor Islands.
All local tourist offices offer this 4 island tour, you can also book online in advance.
13. Pub Crawl
Experience the lively nightlife in Aonang, meet other backpackers and tourists, and make hazy memories!
Up To You Bar holds a free bar crawl that promises to be a lot of fun!
14. Bamboo Tattoo
Also known as a Sak Yant tattoo, getting a bamboo tattoo in Thailand is the ultimate memorable thing to do in Aonang. Bamboo tattoos are spiritual, and often associated with protection, good luck, and fortune.
The tattoo is administered by a master called an ajarn. Rather than using a tattoo gun, the ajarn will expertly hand-poke your design with a sharpened stick of bamboo.
It takes longer than a regular tattoo but is less painful, and is a tattoo method unique to Thailand.
I highly recommended J Friendly Ink Tattoo, everyone was so kind and welcoming.

Best Places To Stay In Aonang
I highly recommend Silk Condominium, located in the centre of Aonang. This is where I stayed. The building is new, with excellent facilities including a large outdoor pool, and a top-class gym. The views from the apartment were also a highlight, along with the kind staff.
If you would rather stay in a hotel then Centara Beach Resort & Spa is located on the beach, offers a large outdoor pool, spa, and fitness centre. The rooms are large and modern, most feature a balcony.
