Greece’s capital city Athens is an outdoor museum with some of the world’s top historical sites located here. The city is friendly, colourful and at times gritty, all whilst under the heat of the Mediterranean sun.
If you are planning a trip to Athens then check out my posts on this awesome city along with a few helpful tips and recommended experiences to ensure you have a memorable trip.
What To Know Before You Go To Athens
- Best time to visit: March-May and September-November for cooler weather and fewer crowds
- Tipping is not compulsory but it is appreciated
- Athens Pass can save you money on attractions
- Cards are widely accepted but some small restaurants and cafes require cash
- Monastiraki Flea Market + Ermou Street are the best places in Athens to shop for souvenirs
- Check here for when you can enter historical sites for free.
- Travel Insurance: I recommend True Traveller for EU/UK citizens and World Nomads for anyone outside of here.

- [$$] Apollo Hotel: overlooking the Parthenon and just a few metres from Metaxourgio Metro Station is a convenient base. Rooms are cosy and some even have a view of the Parthenon. A continental breakfast buffet is included in price. check availability
