What To Expect In Skopje

Language

The national and most widely spoken language is Macedonian, this written in the Cyrillic alphabet. A large number of Macedonians also speak Albanian.
I had no issues communicating in English with locals in Skopje. The majority of restaurants have an English menu.

Religion

Most Macedonians are Orthodox Christian, while the rest follow Islam and Catholicism.

Currency

Currency is the denar (MKD).
Card payments are widely accepted but a few small establishments took cash only.

Plugs

Macedonia uses plug type F.
The voltage is 230 volts at a frequency of 50 Hz.

Visas

Citizens of Europe, Australia, USA, UK, and Canada can enter Macedonia visa-free for up to 90 days within a 6 month period.

Check here the requirements for your country.

Sim Cards

Macedonia is not part of the EU, therefore EU citizens will face roaming charges.

I highly recommend Airalo who I’ve been using as my e-sim provider for the last years.

You just download the app, choose the amount of data, and install the sim. It allows you to keep your home sim on your phone.

If you decide to use Airalo get $3 off with my code TARA1104.

Insurance

The government of Macedonia requires all foreign visitors to have travel insurance upon entry to the country. You could be asked for proof of this at immigration.

Best Time To Visit Skopje

Skopje has a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and cold often snowy winters.

June to September is considered the hot season with average temperatures of 26°C. Whereas November to February is the cold season with average temperatures of 10°C but it can dip below -3°C.
