1. Sibiu, Romania

affordable christmas markets in europe on a budget

Cute, cosy, charming and historical is how I describe Sibiu. I am Sibiu’s biggest fan, listen if Sibiu has only one fan, you guessed it, it’s me! As Romania’s 15th biggest city it is not a metropolis by any means but its picturesque streets look like they’ve been plucked straight from a fairytale. Think colourful houses, cathedrals, medieval arches, narrow alleys, pretty squares and delicious food. Moreover, Sibiu is located on the foothills of the Făgăraș Mountains which looks stunning with covered in snow.

Sibiu Christmas Market Highlights

In mid-November Sibiu’s liveliest square, piata mica, is draped in a canopy of fairy lights where wooden huts, trains, and a Ferris wheel are waiting for you.

That is not all though, within the courtyard of Muzeul National Brukenthal is a DJ playing fun remixes of Christmas classics with Christmas cocktails, piata mare is festively decorated with a few stalls along with even more stalls on the main street. You can find cosy hats, handpainted decorations and of course food like hot pepper jam, pork and gingerbread.

Travellers seeking a magical budget Christmas Market destination in Europe will not be disappointed by Sibiu.

Frequently voted Europe’s best Christmas Market, Zagreb is no hidden gem, yet it still remains off the radar for many travellers planning a budget December break. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, it is landlocked and cheaper than coastal Croatian cities such as Split and Dubrovnik, offering a budget Christmas market alternative. Although Croatia is famous for its sunshine and summer getaways, winters are chilly and cosy, the perfect climate for an affordable Christmas market.

Zagreb Christmas Market Highlights

Zagreb Christmas Market (Zagreb Advent) is a unique experience, rather than one central location the market is spread across various parts of the city. The city is compact meaning you can walk between markets which can help save money on transportation, leaving you with more cash to spend on mulled wine or Krvavica.

Transforming into a Christmas town Zagreb is truly a magical Christmas destination, the trams even get the festive treatment, so don’t be surprised if you see some donned in tinsel. Each part of the city is atmospheric and unique, from ice skating on the majestic King Tomislav Square, shopping for handmade gifts with live music in Zrinjevac Park, eating delicious local and international food at Strossmayer Promenade and Park Josipa Jurja to exploring secret tunnels, there is really so much to do. Advent in Zagreb is an affordable and unforgettable Christmas market gem in Europe.
