Cute, cosy, charming and historical is how I describe Sibiu. I am Sibiu’s biggest fan, listen if Sibiu has only one fan, you guessed it, it’s me! As Romania’s 15th biggest city it is not a metropolis by any means but its picturesque streets look like they’ve been plucked straight from a fairytale. Think colourful houses, cathedrals, medieval arches, narrow alleys, pretty squares and delicious food. Moreover, Sibiu is located on the foothills of the Făgăraș Mountains which looks stunning with covered in snow.

In mid-November Sibiu’s liveliest square, piata mica, is draped in a canopy of fairy lights where wooden huts, trains, and a Ferris wheel are waiting for you.
That is not all though, within the courtyard of Muzeul National Brukenthal is a DJ playing fun remixes of Christmas classics with Christmas cocktails, piata mare is festively decorated with a few stalls along with even more stalls on the main street. You can find cosy hats, handpainted decorations and of course food like hot pepper jam, pork and gingerbread.

Estonia’s capital Tallinn was awarded the best Christmas market in 2019, now in 2024 it is still considered one of the best Christmas markets in Europe. The capital of Estonia is a well-preserved medieval city, a delight to explore at any time but especially in December.

The main location of Tallinn Christmas market is the UNESCO old town hall square, this 700-year-old hall is where the oldest tree display in Europe is. Snow is almost always guaranteed in December in Tallinn, which of course adds to the festive charm when you are sipping glogg surrounded by snow-capped rooftops.

4. Timisoara, Romania
The second Romanian Christmas market on the list is Timisoara, Romania sure knows how to celebrate Christmas. You have likely never heard of Timisoara, Romania’s 5th largest city has been crowned the European Capital Of Culture numerous times, most recently 2023. Aside from Christmas festivities, there are many museums and historically significant landmarks to visit, so much so that it has garnered the nickname “Little Vienna”.
Timisoara Christmas Market Highlights
The main location of Timisoara’s Christmas market is Piata Victoriei (Victory Square) where up to 50 wooden stalls with food and traditional Romanian crafts are sold. A large stage is also erected with live music from traditional Romanian to more contemporary music playing throughout the day, this creates such a special atmosphere as you walk around the markets.
Aside from Piata Victoriei, there is an ice skating rink on Piata Libertatii (Liberty Square). The walk between the two squares is on a charming cobbled path. To keep you warm I recommend eating placinta cu branza (Romanian cheese bread) and mica (small Romanian kebabs).

5. Sofia, Bulgaria
Sofia is one of the best cities to visit in Europe at Christmas. Home to Bulgaria’s biggest Christmas markets, it is similar to Zagreb with several different markets in Sofia that you can visit. The central boulevard Vitosha is lit up along with illuminations on the baroque buildings.

The main market is a German Christmas market (Deutscher Weihnachtsmarkt Sofia) located in the City Garden, although this might sound strange Christmas markets are a relatively new concept in Bulgaria, so the market is German-themed. Expect to find classic German food like Bratwurst and gingerbread to a backdrop of live jazz and Bulgarian pop. Sofia is also home to the largest ice skating rink in Europe, Ariana ice rink.

It should take approximately 15 minutes to walk between the two markets. Keep yourself warm with a traditional Lithuanian curd doughnut or cepelinai while walking to and from each market.

The port city of Gdansk is located in Northern Poland, its stunning architecture, craft beer houses and Motlawa River Embankment draw in 1 million tourists each year, making it Poland’s second most visited city.
